A wind-whipped fire destroyed two homes in the south Natomas area of Sacramento early Thursday.

Firefighters received a report at 12:19 a.m. of a blaze burning residences at 515 and 519 Rancho Roble Way.

The first engine company arrived to find a raging fire and heavy smoke engulfing both homes, Sacramento Fire Department Capt. Jim Doucette said.

Firefighters immediately requested more help as 20-mph north winds fueled the flames.

Doucette said firefighters managed to keep the fire from spreading to other homes, but two other outbuildings were also lost.

The homes in the neighborhood are located close together, which made protecting other residences difficult, Doucette added.

There were no injuries reported.

The Red Cross responded to help the two families who lost their homes. A total of eight adults and five children received assistance.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
