SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Highway 12 was shut down temporarily on Thursday because of high winds. The road reopened at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said.Meanwhile, breezy weather was also blamed for a series of power outages in the Central Valley and firefighters were on high alert for blazes.Highway 12 was closed between Highway 160 and Interstate 5. The California Highway Patrol said big rigs were being blown all over the road. Some wrecks were reported.About 2,300 customers in northwest Woodland lost power, Pacific Gas and Electric said. Woodland High School was also affected.Sacramento Municipal Utility District said about 1,300 customers in the South Land Park area of Sacramento were without electricity.Another outage in the area of Fruitridge Road and 43rd Street affected about 200 customers.Several other small outages were also reported in West Sacramento and in the Rocklin area. Some of the outages were blamed at least in part on power lines slapping together in the wind. The Cosumnes Community Services District on Thursday closed the 127-acre Elk Grove Regional Park because of wind. Officials took the move to make sure no one is hurt by falling branches.Of particular concern are some of the heritage oak trees, some of which are more than 200 years old."The limbs are heavier in dry periods like this as the big trees are absorbing water and that makes them more prone to breakage," Dave Womack, the district's Superintendent of Parks, said in a news release.
