An injured suspected drunken driver who escaped from UC Davis Medical Center in a hospital gown Thursday morning by was captured within hours, the California Highway Patrol said.

Michael Eugene Jastraub, 50, was found by police about two blocks from the hospital in the early afternoon.

Jastraub is expected to face a manslaughter charge for his alleged involvement in a fatal May 15 crash.

The CHP said Jastraub is blamed for causing a wreck at Florin Road and Fletcher Farm Drive that killed Janell Cummings and left Cummings' 12-year-old niece with a major head injury. Another girl was also hurt in the wreck.

Jastraub, who was blamed in two other hit-and-run crashes, was recovering from spleen and rib injuries at the medical center.

The CHP said Jastraub managed to evade police assigned to guard him and slip out of the hospital at about 10:15 a.m.

CHP respresentative Michael Bradley said authorities believe Jastraub planned his escape.

Jastraub may have left the hospital in a gold late-1980s Mitsubishi pickup truck that has a white camper shell. Jastraub's girlfriend may have been the driver.

Jastraub's behavior at the time of his arrest suggests he may have been under the influence of drugs, Bradley said.
