WOODLAND, Calif. -- The man accused of killing a Yolo County sheriff's deputy will be allowed to wear plainclothes and won't need restraints, a judge ruled Thursday.

Marco Antonio Topete, 35, has been charged with one felony count of murder with special circumstances since the victim was an officer.

The judge struck down the defense's request for no cameras to be allowed in the court during pretrial proceedings.

Topete is accused of shooting Deputy Tony Diaz on June 15 in the small town of Dunnigan during a traffic stop.

During Thursday's hearings, Topete wore a bulletproof vest and was flanked by two deputies.

Security is expected to be heightened for Friday's proceedings, officials said.
