Prison Guard Union To Back Recall Effort, Spokesman Says

An initiative to recall Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger may be under way, according to a representative of a state prison guard union.

On Sunday, a union spokesman told KCRA 3 that the California Correctional Peace Officers Association is in full support of a recall effort against Schwarzenegger and that recall papers will be filed Monday morning.

Union spokesman Lance Corcoran said that a number of groups are interested in pursuing a recall, and that the governor and his administration have been an utter failure on budget and policy issues.

"In the history of governors in California, we think that this is the worst governor we ever had," Corcoran said.

Corcoran also said that if the union decides to help finance a recall effort, they will go all out.

Some of the issues the union has with the governor include the lack of a state budget and not exempting more than 30,000 prison guards from the executive order to reduce salaries to $6.55 an hour, Corcoran said.

Aaron McLear, a spokesman for the governor, said the union is just upset that their proposed raise was not passed, and that Schwarzenegger will not be intimidated by the threat of a recall.

Schwarzenegger's campaign to become governor was successful after a recall effort against Gray Davis in 2003.
